Please allow me to introduce myself …
Welcome to my blog. If I have one flaw, it is that I just can’t keep my opinions to myself.
I wasn’t always this way. In my formative years, I was a very shy and awkward person. I found some freedom from that psychological jail through photography in my teenage years.
Then came my career in newspapers — first, as a photographer, later as reporter and editor at newspapers in Western Canada. That included my last stint here in Yellowknife at Northern News Services.
While many newspaper columnists look at their work as an extension of themselves, I decided to incorporate some elements of the radio industry in my approach, developing an “on-air” personality, so to speak.
Being primarily a political columnist, I took my penchant for conservatism at that point in my life and enhanced it into a vibrant voice for the right. And that worked out just fine in southern Manitoba, where the political map is decidedly Tory blue. To this day, I hear from people who miss my weekly column at the Brandon Sun, which I wrote from 2004 to 2014. I’ve even recently been sought out to write about political affairs in that part of the country from my viewpoint in the North.
And as a writer for hire, I might do a bit of that, just for fun.
But I digress.
Ironically, as a young adult in my 20s, I was a real left-winger. I even helped organize a union in the newsroom at the Brandon Sun in the late-’80s.
So now, as I find myself semi-retired and living in a different place than the red-neck regions of my earlier life, I have done much navel gazing as I was setting up this website and preparing to write a regular blog.
Perhaps I was inspired a bit by Stephen Colbert, whose “self-important right-wing commentator” on The Colbert Report a decade ago later slid far to the left on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
While my shift won’t be as apparent as that, I will now hopefully provoke more serious and thoughtful discussion than white-hot outrage. I live in a place that casts a wary glance towards party politics. My old Tory template of trumpeting market solutions, common sense realities, fewer taxes, smaller government and hard-edged throw-away-the-key justice doesn’t fly up here. Conveniently, that meshes with where I find my personal views leaning towards at this stage in my life.
Have I mellowed in my late-50s? Maybe a bit. Am I becoming more caring and compassionate? Yup.
If I want people to read what I’m saying, I need to speak clearly from my heart and not through the filter of some cartoonish character.
Why do I bother to do all this? Anywhere I have lived in my life I have tried to be a good citizen. I think I have something to say that people will be interested in reading.
I love Yellowknife and intend on staying here for the rest of my life.
I welcome feedback on my blog. But I won’t be activating a comments section until I have a sizeable body of work posted.
